– Majored in biology for two years at Mississippi State, then switched to geology and earned a B.S. in Geology.
– Attended graduate school at South Florida and earned an M.S. in Geology, specializing in invertebrate paleontology.
– Attended graduate school as a non-degree seeking student at Jackson State to study genetics and environmental science.
Teaching Experience:
– Taught Historical Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology courses at South Florida from 1993 to 1995.
– Taught Physical Geology, Physical Science, Biology, Zoology, and Developmental Math at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi from 1996 to 2001.
– Taught English in Yukuhashi, Japan from 2003 to 2005.
– Has taught Earth Science and Environmental Science at Hillsborough Community College from 2002 to 2003 and 2006 to the present, and also taught Astronomy from 2006 to 2011.

Author, Photographer, and Speaker:
– Was a columnist and photographer for Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine from 1999 to 2019 and regular contributor to other aquarium and scuba diving magazines, with nearly 500 photo-illustrated publications.
– Has written and illustrated 7 books on the subjects of marine biology and aquarium science/animal husbandry, as well as an Earth Science textbook and lab manual.
– Has had several thousand photographs published in artistic magazines, aquarium books and magazines, trade journals, corporate newsletters, marketing brochures, on product labels, and on educational websites.
– Has also spoken at over 50 marine biology and aquarium science conferences and aquarium society meetings in the U.S., Canada, and France.

– Served in the 365th S&S Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve, from 1985 to 1988.
– Served in the 20th Army Special Forces Group, Mississippi Army National Guard, from 1988 to 1993.
